just get him something that shows that you know him-u mentioned u guys have been friends for a while before u started dating. What are his interests??...get him something related to what he likes , something that shows that u actually thought about what would be a good gift for him. something that has your name ur thoughtfulness written all over it. and sometimes if u really truly care about one another material things don't matter. for example I love it when someone gives me a well written card along with my favorite candy bar or just something thoughtful creative and personal like that. don't be traditional be creative and be urself. good luck! hope ur valentine's is perfect!

guys dont really care for presents, they want the company, or in most guys cases an easy night, so maybe you will organise an evening, like dinner and then sitting at home watching a movie
us guys arnt great organisers

talk to him about it ask him what he wants, and if he dosent give you an answer make him a card or something sweet and give him candy or something or something you know he would like.
