My friend says that being on the honor roll doesn't make someone smart, it just means that you have good memorization skills. How can I tell him that being on the honor roll does mean you are smart and how can I explain to him that my friends are smart for making good grade? Please help.

He's right. Though good grades does indicate aptitude, it does not prove you are smart. Certainly, the opposite is not true. If you get poor grades, it does not mean you are not smart.

Stephen Hawking, maybe the smartest living human being, did terribly in school until his last years at Cambridge.

Einstein was a terrible student. Intelligence is multi-faceted, and even now includes motor skills.

I think intelligence is the desire for knowledge... and being on the honor roll is a wonderful achievement but doesn't prove intelligence. It does prove good study habits and fortitude. I know lots of creative people who are much smarter than those who have a narrow views and look down their noses at others.
I couldn't afford college but have an IQ of 140.
I personally strive to know a little about a great deal of topics and am constantly reading and asking other people questions and thus have become a good listener..
I had fairly good grades and chose not to apply myself academically because I knew that I would not have been able to afford higher education. I have no regrets as I have been a Master Color Technician and Educator as well as a leader in a computer firm and am now managing an animal hospital and have scrubbed into surgeries. All this with no college education!
As long as we never stop wanting to know more then our possible future intelligence is limitless.

intelligence means the ability to solve problems: a gymanst solves immense physical problems in a split second - this is also a form of intelligence. However generally people refer to mental intelligence. While memory is a prerequisite it is not the only factor. The ability to canvass all possibel factors in a problem's possible solution and to think laterally are alos improtant. Creativity plays a part. Memeory is the basis: train your memory with mnemonics; hooks and chains; visualistation; chunking and clustering; and so on. My IQ is 150. Practics is also important - get some books of IQ-type puzzles and go through them several times. Apart from memory, concentration is important. Then there is logic; the ability to arrange things in order and see the relationships between them. Hope that helps. The other thing is genetics: an 80% correltation obtqains between children and their parents: so if a parents IQ ia 100 (the Stanford Binet average) the child will be between 80 and 125 (100 is 80% of 125). You cant doa lot about genetics of course! Academic ability does indicate intelligence: it is one of the only ways and one of the simplest to evaluate intelligfence. Those who never perfomr academically like to scoff at those who do, but the truth is that those who perform academically have put their money where their mouth is and proved something to themselves and the world - the others have proved nothing. As bob dylan siad: there's no success like failure, and failure's no success at all. While there are those that have succeeded without high academic performance (Ricahrd Branson, Mick Jagger, Tom Cruise, etc) these people are very rare and have those other forms of intelligence I was talking about. Most highly succesful people are alos very bright. Society has to judge people by something: academic ability is a first step. It means people can accept resonsibility and solve problems - in other words they can trusted to handle other peoples resources - which is a reasonable definition of a good job. And for that they get rewarded - ie the big bucks. Acaddemic ability is not the only answer to assessing intelligence but its a good start

Well, there is a difference, in my opinion, in being smart and being intelligent. You can be book smart and have the common sense of an ape. I've know a lot of people like that. People who are smart and can do any math problem you put in front of them but can't find their way to the grocery store on the corner.

According to the dictionary smart means showing mental alertness and calculation and resourcefulness.

So, if you exhibit these qualities then you can consider yourself smart. The difference with the word intelligence has to do with having knowledge: possessing sound knowledge; "well-informed readers"

Now, if you have a hard time understanding the definition of smart then, that's probably not you. I hope this helps!

Being on the honor roll certainly doesn't make you dumb either like your friend is implying. You have to have some degree of intelligence to make the honor roll. But work ethic is probably number one.

inteligence is a tricksy thing... ignore that person he is asking for t-r-o-u-b-l-e. being in the honor role doesn't nessecarily mean you are intelligent, but it is very likely that your friends in the honor role ARE smart, as those tests aren't exatcly easy...
