For the United States Dec 7 1941 when the Japanese surprise attacked our US Navy at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. President Roosevelt then declared war on Japan and Germany.

It depends on what country, Japan was in WWII before the U.S. Germany invaded Poland, France at different times so it depends on what country, I think for the USA it started with the "Day of Infamy" Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7th 1941. when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, crippling most of the Pacific fleet. However on a unofficial level, through the lend-lease act we were helping Great Britain. In fact we have a teapot that says "For England and Democracy" "Escorted to the USA by the Royal Navy"

Actually there are many dates that can be called the start of WW2, but the first military action of Hitlers was on March 12, 1938- German troops crossed the border and occupied Austria. Hitler stood in his open car in his brown storm trooper uniform as he drove into Vienna. On March 13 he proclaimed the Anschluss and declared that Austria was now the Ostmark, a province of the Third Reich.
