My hair is processed (permed straight) and it's really thick and now whenever I do anything to it (like take it out of a ponytail, put it in a ponytail, style it, etc.) lots of it come out (they don't come out in clumps or anything, they just fall out loosely). What's going on with my hair?

How can I strengthen it or revitalize it or do whatever to stop my hair from falling out like this and get it back to it's non-falling out state! Desperate!

First, if you're using rubber bands stop, they tear the hair. Secondly, determine if it's breaking or shedding. Breakage would be shorter hairs than shedding. Shedding a few hairs a day is normal, shed hair is longer with a little white bulb at one of the ends. If its breakage, stop wearing pony tails with bands, use hair instead with a bobby pin, you can get silky weave and wrap it around your hair and anchor with the pin. Trust me, it works. You need to keep your hair moisturized with water based oil lotions like Profective, not grease or anything with mineral oil in it. Petroluem is not good for the hair, nor is mineral oil, they both clog pores and can result in thinning hair. They also fail to moisturize, all they do is just sit on the hair and scalp not doing any good for you or your hair. You'd also want to use a protien treatment every 2 weeks like Soft Sheen's reconstructor followed by a deep conditioning moisturizing treatment. Make sure that every night you wear a satin or silk fitted cap on your head at night and under hats and to never allow your hair to rub against shirt collars or anything cotton, cotton dries out hair and will break it off. You can also do conditioner washes with an everyday moisturizing conditioner without any shampoo, I love this stuff called Un-Damaged Goods, use it every other night, and do not blow dry, allow it to dry naturally under your cap while you sleep.
If your hair is excessively shedding it may be because of what you eat, try taking vitimins specifically for hair and nails, and comb it less often.

1. Stop damaging your hair. Quit putting chemicals on it, and don't put it in a ponytail, etc.
2. Wash with a shampoo for chemically treated hair and don't wash every day if you don't have to. These shampoos are specially made for hair that has been treated with chemicals. All other shampoos have ingredients that are too harsh on your fragile hair. Chemically treated shampoos are made with more gentle ingredients. They will cleanse your hair without drying it out. Rinse in cold water.
3. Use lots of silk and protein conditioner or a conditioner for chemically treated hair. You cannot overcondition. Conditioner not only closes the hair cuticle (meaning, it protects your hair from the environment and locks in the curl) but it also serves as a detangler. You don't want to pull to hard on your permed hair when combing it out. This can cause frizzy ends and breakage.
4. You might want to use a K Pak reconstructor if your hair is really bad.
5. You can spray on an instant detangler if you feel you need it even after conditioning.
6. After shampooing and conditioning, gently towel dry your hair. Do not rub it around too much in the towel.
7.Be careful when blow-drying your perm so you don't over dry your hair.

A little breakage is normal, a lot of breakage is not. If you think you are having more than you should, go see a professional beautician.

Stop perming your hair is a really great way to strengthen it :P

Perming straight is just as bad as bleaching your hair. It kills the roots. Why not buy a very good straightener...expensive all up but think of the money you would be saving in the long run, not to mention the hair.

Other than that...hot oil treatments work wonders :) Vo5 have some good ones!

It's probably just overprocessed. Have your relaxers (not perms) done by a professional...don't do them yourself. In between relaxers, keep the hair moisturized and minimize heat styling. And make sure that your ponytails are not too tight.

Try doing some deep conditioning treatments on it. If you're not sure what to buy go to a salon and they can help you. You can even have the treatments done at the salon if you want.
