Okay, maybe I picked a bad dentist, I don't know. I hate dentists and have had very bad experiences with them (last time i went was for a toothache and ended up getting an attempted 3 hour root canal with warn off novacaine). The dentist I picked uses the wand to give the novicaine and its great, but when I talk to him about my problems he just says lets pull it. He argued with me over the perscription last time and I did try to take what he perscribed but couldn't. I am afraid that he will just pull the tooth first then give antibiotics which will start another fight. I end up feeling very scared and distrustful of dentists again. I am seeing him tommorrow because I have another toothache again where the infection was last time. I don't want to have a tooth pulled if it is absoutly not necessary, I don't have that many molars left as it is. He doesn't do follow ups and schedules appointments every 15-30 minutes. Should I look for another dentist or what?

By the way on the last visit three weeks ago he pulled a wisdom tooth that was very infected and perscribed clindamycin but i couldn't take it and it would have cost over $700.00 for the liqid form so he gave me eyrthromycin instead and said maybe it would work but it probably wouldn't. He also said that I should be more worried about the infection going to my brain rather than not being able to swallow a stupid pill. I know it is psychological but I can still take childrens tyenol for everything and it gets rid of the pain. I know psychology works. What should I do?

I'm a bit confused but, here goes. First off, if you are not comfortable with this guy, don't go to him. Period! There are numerous dentists and you can find another one.

Why were you not prescribed amoxicillin? Are you allergic to penicillin? If so, clindimycin is the best thing he could have given you, besides the amox. You need to take whatever antibiotics that you are given. I am not sure how good that other antibiotic he gave you works on dental infection, cause we never prescribe that one. If the pills are too big, crush them. If they are capsules, open them and mix them with applesauce. You need the antibiotics in your system.

You don't have to let him pull a tooth on you. It is your choice. Like I said, if you don't trust him, and it sounds like you don't, go to another dentist. I am not defending him, but my dentist also schedules patients every 30-60 minutes. That doesn't make him a bad dentist, it makes him obviously well liked and trusted if he has that many patients.

I don't understand the "no-follow up" thing. We always do those.

If you are not comfortable with this dentist...find one you are comfortable with. It is your right to "interview" a dentist. Set up an appointment w/ a dentist in your area for just a consult. Ask questions and express your concerns. If you and this Dr. are on the same page...switch.

I do have to defend your current Dr though. There are certain antibiotics used for different types of infection. He is required to give you a script that will work. It sounds like you are unable to swallow pills. Most adult script are in pill form, so ( not to sound mean) try to get over that fear. I suffer from anxiety and it can be hard to swallow at times. You have to talk yourself out of it, or take it w/ a piece of bread.

For a Dr. to schedule only 15-30 min. appointments basically means, he is all about the money. If your appointment was 15-30 min. that is normal for an emergency. I don't see how he can preform any procedures in 15-30 min. That's almost impossible.

Anyway...if you are unhappy, you don't have to be. Find a Dr. that meets your expectations.

dentist are a strange breed of humanity. they whine and cry when they don't get their way. there are good ones out there but you have to find them. a good doctor is conservative with treatment plans. time is money and the more patients a doctor sees the more money he/she makes. so your doc is making bank. get another doctor. we pay a lot of money to see doctors so you better be satisfied with them. he sounds very insensitive. you can refuse treatment if you are uncomfortable with it. also if the novacaine is wearing off quickly its probably because of the infection. if you need a root canal, you already have an absess. pulling is the easiest answer but not necessarily the best. get a second opinion.

Switch dentists. Whether or not the dentist is properly caring for his patients, it is obviously putting a lot of stress on you. And the dentist's office is the last place you should feel stressed at. It makes an already uncomfortable situation ten times worse.

Hun, anytime you don't feel comfortable with a doctor, walk out don't go back, your doing him a favor by being a patient,, there's hundreds of dentist around, if he screws up then he loses, I'm sure he don't treat all his patients like that,he needs you, you don't need him, ask around, ask friends, co-workers, family, someone has to have a good dentist. i don't like dentist either, but i told mine up front I'm scared and don't like pain, and he's always babied me. but goodness no if they don't treat you like gold, get out find a new one, i wont stay with a doctor, if i don't like his staff, you pay way to much money to be treated like crap, don't do it any more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
