Looks like the consensus is ShihTzu. They're nice. I had Pekingese and would much prefer them. They're so relatively calm natured for a smaller dog. But you do have to cautious with their bulging eyes. We also had a Tibetan Spaniel. They're a little quirkier, but more interesting than either. They favor a Pekingese more.

They almost look similar but the Shih Tzu does not have a pushed in nose like a Pekinese. I just got a Shih Tzu 3 months ago and I love him dearly. He is very loving and follows me everywhere. If you want a pet who will adore you, definitely get a Shih Tzu. They are so funny when they start running around really fast - they look like little guinea pigs or something. My husband calls it the Shih Tzu 500. And he is really smart too. You should read up on them online. They are very loyal and very pretty. He is very good with my sons (age 2, 10, and 12) and gets excited when the older ones come home from school.

I think a Shih Tzu, having a less exaggerated form, would tend to be healthier. Peke's are darling, but they are prone to many health problems. However, if you cannot be very active, then a Peke might be perfect.
I think the best way to pick a dog is to find one whose activity needs match yours.

Shih Tzu's are really good dogs so I have heard.. They are said to be one of the smartest dogs.. so yeah Shih Tzu... Pekingnese would be scary comin at ya in the dark...!!!

i have a shih tzu and every where I go people admire him and want to pet him. He is very cute and very energetic.
But grooming and brushing is pretty demending but I don't really care since he is so beautiful with his long hair
