A reserve officer is a person who IS a police officer but only works shifts on occasion. Like weekends shift or Holiday shift, Or during busy holidays such as the 4th of July. They do not pull regular work hours.

Here in Arizona, most reserve officers are very much like full-time officers, but they aren't paid. They are required to work a minimum number of hours pe month (10 in my department), so they can keep their certification. It's like having a volunteer police officer.

Here in Canada most our Canadian Native reservations have their own police services. We often refer to them as the "Reserve Police". Based on what the others have answered I bet this is not what you mean but, hey what the heck, maybe you are Canadian.

A police officer that works when extra officers are needed. They fill in for vacationing police officers and work special events where more manpower is needed.
