Usually whatever change I have leftover from paying for the coffee (unless they're rude--then, nada). Sure, pouring a cup of regular coffee doesn't involve much work, but the complicated drinks are worth something, I think. If you're a regular at the coffee place, they greet you by name, know your usual drink, and can get it started without you even having to ask, then that deserves at least a dollar. If they upgrade you a size for free just because you're a regular, then I think that deserves at least whatever the difference is between the size you paid for and the size they gave you.

A little good karma never hurt anyone and you wouldn't miss a few dimes anyway.

BTW, if you have a Peet's Coffee near you, try it. It's way better than Starbucks!

I rarely tip the person because 1. they aren't very pleasant and 2. they are pouring me a cup of coffee which I then carry to my own table. Where is the service? The "tip jar/cup/bowl" in this country is way out of hand. If the kid at McDonald's doesn't get a tip for pouring me a cup of coffee, then neither should the rude person at Caribou, Starbucks, etc...

Matters on the service I recieve.

If the barista is kind, and has a happy attitude, I will tip about a dollar or two. Most people who work there are generally happy about their job, and are happy to serve me.

I'm not just going there to buy a cup of coffee, great service is rare now a-days.

While I always tip waiters 15-20%, I would only tip a barista if the service and beverage were exceptional (and even then just a nominal amount).

dangit now I want some dutch bros lol. If I get something that's 2.50 I hand them 3.00 and tell them to keep the change, I can never reach that jar in my car. But if the chick is rude they get nada!
