The good Samaritan was not the same religion as the traveler and was the only one that would help him

Yes because almost all religions have something in common: respect for humanity and living things. So, if you were religious enough to hesitate about saving someone of another religion, you'd be religious enough to know it's the right thing to do.

How would you know what my religion is if I'm in a river? But yes I would think, most religions are in favor of doing good deeds for others regardless.

What does what religion you are have to do with helping people? See, that is the thing, that has nothing to do with what pure religion is. Of course you should help whoever you can whenever you can. It's only wrong conceptions of religion that cause people to question another's worth.

If you're a decent human being and you are not putting yourself in a really serious risk by doing it, then yes. Please, if I am drowning in a river, don't take the time to ask what religion I am/am not. Just jump in and help me!

The answer lies within yourself and only by questioning yourself can you find it. Do U care to jump, why would U jump, and do i need saving are good thoughts to pursue.

If you believe that I need saving and you are the one to do it, and feel confident in your own beliefs, then, by all means, JUMP...

If you can swim, whether you are the same religion someone is or not, you should do what you could to save them. May God Bless U.

Of course you should. That's the benefit of saving lives. Emergency Response persons worldwide do it on a dailay basis, sometimes hourly basis. All life will fight to survive. Sometimes the fight is an actual fight, sometimes the fight for survival is a simple word for assistance.

Now, the question changes to what do you consider life.

Logically speaking yes. Because I would for you.
Symbolically speaking no. I'm not going to play russian rulet just to save your life. I won't go shoot up heroin hoping I may be able to show you a way out.
