Wondering how I should do this. I'm planning on stroking it to a 4.6 or even a 5.0 depending on the price and work. I'm also adding a performance chip. Just wondering for some suggestions and any ideas, trying to add a little more power to the engine.

Originally I was going to swap engines, but after researching it for awhile it turns out that it would be costly and have to redo the whole drivetrain and tranny and everything else. Plus, the 4.0 last for a long *** time so I figured I'd just enhance it instead of changing it out. David, thanks for the site, but the rest of the post was pointless. So Ping your saying just get some pieces from newer Jeeps to replace the worn ones? Thanks for the responses.

I'm not looking to buy a new engine, that would be way too costly. I'm getting a magnaflow exhaust with a performance header, a really nice air intake and a chip as well. After the responses I'm probably going to go with a 4.6 stroke. How much would that cost and what would I have to change ?

Here's Dino's site specific to the 242 Stroker buildup options:

Dino is a frequent poster on this site where many are eager to give you 1st hand advice on 4.0 strokers. Start with 'Horsepower gains' thread.

Then top off your project with a 2000+ intake manifold:

Assuming you have the AW4 transmission, known as tough and reliable, and suitable for a stroker.

Well as for headers go I'd suggest Thorley. 14 GA compared to 16 from borla, gibson, edelbrock, 18 GA from pacesetter.
Magna flow is cool.
AEM makes the Best Cold air intake. Don't touch your TB until the stroker is in place. As far as a stroker kit is concerned I'd check out 505 performance. I've spoken with them. They were a big help. But, I'd try a chip before stroking.
Remember after stroking you will have to upgrade your injectors and fuel pump. Probably wanna upgrade the u-joints also.

You could free up some hp buy changing you rocker arms, port and polished head, high flow cat converter.

Personally....after I pay off the GC I'm swapping my 4.0 for a Mustang 5.0 in my Wrangler. Heard one once on the road and it was AWESOME!

Check out Jp Magazine. Best and only Jeep Mag out there.

do a search for hesco. I wouldn't go to 5.0. A 4.0L engine block isn't made to be bored out that far, even though it can technically can be done. Plus it is more likely to warp from heat. If you want "a little more power" Get the head of a 96 or newer jeep and take it to a machine shop to get it ported and polished. You can pick up 30-40 horsepower. And as for as the last guy who answered. I am sorry for him. Of course you don't know. thats why you are asking. Good luck.

I'm guessing that you probably have a rock stuck in there, try driving the Jeep backwards for a bit, and at the same time apply brakes. this should dislodge it. (when doing this the grinding might seem to get worst first before it gets better)sounds like small problem.

Why? Performance parts for this application are almost non-existent. Have you checked Summit Racing and other performance parts manufacturers?? You don't have a lot to pick from, and what you spend trying to make it work you won't get many horses per dollar spent. How about a small block chevy V-8 swap?

If you would rather buy one instead, go here...

Your transfer case will be fine, but your transmission may need an upgrade. Older automatics were never very reliable, but the manual ax-15 was better, but won't hold up very well with a 4.6. You might want to think about upgrading to an nv-3500 or 4500.

god damnit i hate when people tell you to swap to a different motor when you ask something for a strait 6

go to www.cliffordperformance.net

im guessing that since you want the 4.0 to be 4.6 or 5.0 you plan to steal mustang emblems?
im also guessing that you have never worked on an engine before, also while im at it, im guessing you don't even know how an engines displacement is measured.

you would be adding 6.666 cubes to EACH cylinder.

thats ******* nuts, not to mention impossible
