My sister has had 2 bad wrecks in Taurus' and she has been protected both times, so I think they are good on the safety side.

I had one of those until four years ago. Nice handling , very practical [station wagon]. never refused to start.Gas mileage is good too but here comes the bad news.LOTS of repairs.two transmissions. On warranty . other wise i had an extended warranty wich was used frequently. too numerous to mention here.i traded it in when i fixed the aircondition for 1500$ canadian.
Rear brakes are disk - seized up, cost :900 $
I traded it in for a new camry the dealer gave me 2500$ after some haggeling . Today i wouldn't pay more than 500 for it . I do
however advise not to buy this trouble proned car at all .Ford really screwed up on this one . there is a good reason why it's discontinued now.Buy a japanese car - less trouble.

I had a 2001 Mercury Sable for about six years. This is the same car with a slightly different look. There were a lot of things I did not like about the car. In fact, I named it the F-HOP (flaming hunk of poo) because I hated it so much. The engine was fine although it didn't get particularly good mileage and the ride was fine when you were going straight. Much of what I didn't like was the handling and braking and details such as the fact that the windshield wipers froze in any amount of winter weather. I wouldn't buy one and wouldn't have bought this had it not been a company car. BTW - I was ready to call the car something besides a hunk of poo, but my then six-year-old son was in the car with me as we were skidding to a stop in the rain.

We have a 1996 ford taurus and we have had it for four years. they are real good vehicals. i've only had to put brakes on it and change the oil. it has over 100,000 miles on it and its still a good car.So go figure, if the car has a new motor in it you better buy it. it probably would be a good car for you. it would last you a long time if you take good care of it.

the ford taurus was one of the best small little cars in 96.
but knowing it is used it depends on how the owner before treated his car and how he drove from day to day and if they went in for regular maintanance and checks on the vehicle.
i would need more info on the car to give you a clear answer to your question.

depends what 3.0 motor it has. the dohc had timing chain issues. the ffv motor had flex fuel module problems . and the reg 3.0 was the better of the 3 models but had egr valve , tbi issues. all had their share of recalls. call a ford serv dept and give them the VIN number and tell them to run an OASIS report on your car. it will tell you if it has recalls open and service history.

i own a repair shop, and a good 96 model in good condition,is only worth 2000 at the best ,even with a new engine in it ,there's no real value on it right now,its already over ten years old,and the problems they give, engines, and transmissions, and they already replaced one of them, you,ll probably have problems with the transmission in it later on,unless their selling this one really cheap,i wouldn't think its that good of a deal, its going to give problems ,any car does, even with a new engine, its only worth two thousand at best, and that's if its in the best of condition,it might be a good idea to pass on this one,it could turn out to be more trouble than its worth, good luck,i hope this help,s.

These cars when new had squeaks and rattles, now its 11 years old, I wouldn't give much for it. The only thing that was good on it was the 3.0L engine
