Two words: fobic acid. See leaves and other detritus will decompose by bacterial action and the resulting nutrients will make the soil more fertile and conducive to new plants growing, or old plants growing in much healthier soil. Soil should contain nitrates and phosphates that the plant can absorb through its root systems. Without proper soil the plant cannot get the nutrients it needs from the environment and will not survive in many cases.
