I started smoking at age 27 and continued for about 8 years at the rate of 1 pack a day. Then quit as a condition of marriage. Now I'm in my sixties and have started having respiratory problems. A complete pulmonary workup disclosed that I had COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). It is the third leading cause of death in the USA. When my doctor heard the reason that I stopped smoking after ten years he told me that my wife probably saved my life as a result of that requirement to stop smoking.
