I'm trying to say, "Quito! You gave me a heart attack" but I don't think the 'me' can be placed in front of the 'diste'. If not, how would I best say this sentence? Thanks.

You can't use it after diste, it makes no sense, you have to place it before the diste

It would be: "Quito! Me diste un ataque al corazon"
or "Quito! Me diste un infarto."
In spanish, you may use "infarto" for heart attack

Okay...in old fashioned written Spanish, I believe, people could put object pronouns after preterite verbs. This is no longer the case, however, and you should only put object pronouns
1. before a conjugated verb OR
2. after and attached to an infinitive.
In this case, you don't have an infinitive, only a conjugated verb---so put the object pronoun ME before the verb DISTE, and it will be correct.

I think you can say it either way... with the "me" at the end or before the word. I usually do it before the word, unless it's a command... then I like to use it at the end of the word.
