I think it depends on the person. What were they passionate about? What did they love to do? You can donate to local performance theatres, sports organizations, SADD, MADD, cancer society, the list goes on. If you can post a couple of their passsions, I can give you the names of specific charities you can donate to in their memory. That's a very nice idea for you to do!

Addition - We had an interesting thing happen at my school- a convicted impaired driver selected his punishment (from a list of organiztions to contribute to/ work for) as contributing his fine to our SADD group. We have a high profile group in the community that does a lot of awareness for both th students and community! Find out if your local high school has a group and make a donation to them. It really does go to good awareness programs. I did have MADD on the list but then I recalled hearing in the news they are being investigated for improper distribution of funds (a VERY small percentage goes to programs and the rest goes to admin). That is the best one I know of! Best of luck!

Don't know specific names of charities in Canada but I'm sure you can find one anyway. How about a charity like the Make a Wish Foundation that grants terminally ill children a dying wish? Along with making a much needed contribution in someone's memory as well as making a terminally ill child very happy, you will also be helping to create a memory for another family to hold on to once their child is gone.

If you find yourself short of cash, donate blood. The blood banks are usually glad for any donors that show up.
