A copyright is needed if you are selling any artwork or idea from another source.

If it is a painting that you have done it is legal to sell it without any 'copyright' ... paintings are not 'copyrighted' unless they are 'printed' and then the copyright should be 'understood' but to be 'totally safe' you should have the little c in a circle next to the year and your name on every 'print' you sell.

If they are your paintings no. By the way your work is copyrighted the moment you create it. You don't have to do anything to "get" a copyright. You should however register your copyrighted works.

Registering your copyright makes it easier for you to enforce the copyright. The longer you wait to copyright a piece, the less force you have behind it.

In the case of Winne the Pooh I would be very careful--Disney owns the rights and they have been known to go overboard when it comes to enforcing them. I heard a story about a woman who knitted a sweater with Winnie the Pooh on it to wear to Disney world and when they saw her at the park they fined her for copyright violation! Keep in mind that she wasn't even planning on selling it, she was just keeping it for her own personal use. I'm not sure if they own the rights to the original illustrations but they have released products with similar images. It's probably better to be on the safe side and not sell them.

perfectly legal. I did it for years with photos and such, but for the ease of getting it nowadays and everything, its worth getting it. I had a few of my works get taken and used. Just remember that its first come first serve with copyrighting. But like i said, if your going serious with it, its wroth the investment. Saves you money and face in the end. Ill never forget hanging a work and having someone say that they saw that print already and thenhaving them show me my print on something that i didnt do. Then i heard that they paid 300 bucks for it in a numbered series!! After that i learned, and now i have anything that ever leaves my harddrive on hardprint copyrighted.

Not in the United States it is not illegal. However, a copyright protects you.

I don't think so. The copyright is to protect you from someone copying your paintings and selling them.

If they are your paintings you can sell them. There is a such thing as a common law copyright. Look into it.

Not if you did not copy another material. Copyright is for YOUR protection so someone does not copy YOUR work and try to sell it.

if you are the originator of the work, it is yours to do with as you please, you don't need a copyright, but why would you not want to protect yourself and your work with a copyright is beyond me....
