My 9 year old has issues falling asleep most every night. We have been trying different things to help him relax (music, relaxation, breathing, silence, bathes, warm milk, white noise, even went as far as trying regular noise, lol) but nothing has worked. When he was younger (4 and 5) the Dr told me to give him benedryl but that was a short term fix. I have tried everything I can think of, does anyone have ideas that help children get calm? He grows very frustrated very quickly tjhat he can't go to sleep which only prolongs the process of him falling asleep. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

DragonRider - he is my child...he is entitled to my full attention. In fact I have always made sure that my kids get 100% of my time for at least 10 minutes everynight before they go to sleep. Having my children going to sleep and having love be last thing they felt before bed is ~not~ a bad thing.

Try not to let him have any sugar or caffeine after 4 pm. No juice or anything. My son has the same problem so I started giving him water only after 5pm and he sleeps a lot better now.

Well try not to give him any sodas or sweets, or anything that has sugar five hours or more before his bed time. Set up a schedule= get home from school, an hour outside playing, homework, dinner, bath (maybe a body wash with lavender in it), drink a cup of tea (chamomile), reading a book or some other quiet activity in dimmed light and no tv an hour before bed (lighting sends censors to the brain which doesn't allow him to sleep), lay down. Don't allow him to do anything on his bed besided sleep, Don't do homework, play, or read. This creates a message to the brain that beds are to sleep, nothing else. Hopefully these tips will work. Good Luck!

Why would he go to sleep? He is getting your full attention finding all these ways to get him to sleep. Try this. Firstly when he gets home from school have him do his homework and then send him outside to play basketball or something until dark. Feed him his dinner and make him take a bath. Then give him a cup of chamomile tea and a book for an hour before he goes to bed at 8 or 9. Do this every night and he will sleep. If not he needs to be tired out more..give him some housework or yard work to do. My bet is that he is revved up by computer games and then cant fall asleep. If he is frustrated oh well...he will just have to stay there and rest until he does fall asleep. Don't get sucked into this extra 2 hours on top of his normal bedtime...he will get over it.

This may sound odd to many but it truly works. I followed a feng shui custom by moving my daughters bed so her feet weren't pointed towards the door and she can now see the doorway, I removed the t.v (if that's going to be a problem, cover it) and put all her toys out of view. Now there is nothing to catch her eye and she can see if anyone is entering the room. How many 8 y.o happily go to bed at 7pm everynight.

well i babysit so if they cant sleep i let them watch the food channel or HGTV the peaceful channels. Maybe read them a story (never to old 4 storys lol)

go in bed with her for awhile till she falls asleep then quietly walk out. Dim the lights then come back in about 15 min and shut them off.

thats the stuff i do to put my kids to bed!

make sure you do not give him any caffine at all! turn off the tv and video games 30 min before bed and let him relax with a book or try reading to him yourself something geared towards his age. try rubing his legs and back to get him to relax
