In the US, all males at eighteen are required to register with the selective service. Presently, there is no draft, but they just like to know where you are and what you're doing, in the event they wish further communication. The penalty thing has got meat in it so that you don't think it's an either/ or option, because it is not!

Do not ignore it. It's not a scam. It's not an overzealous recruiter tactic either. It has nothing to do with missing an appointment or some 'weird law'.

It's called Selective Service, and it's a requirement and civic responsibility & duty for all males above the age of 18. It does NOT mean you are being drafted or that you will be drafted. It simply means that you are on the 'list' of potential candidates. It is the law, and if you ignore it, you can get into trouble. Imagine not paying your traffic tickets, times about 1000. Well, actually, not so much. See, you probably wouldn't go to jail or anything like that (but the potential penalty could be five years of prison time AND a $250,000 fine). But you would be denied any federal student funding, job training, employment, etcetera, in the future. Men, born after December 31, 1959, who aren't registered with Selective Service won't qualify for Federal student loans or grant programs. This includes Pell Grants, College Work Study, Guaranteed Student/Plus Loans, and National Direct Student Loans.

But feel free to 'contact the media, and show them the letter'. They will probably get a good laugh.

Maybe you should get more info before you give advice, tattoo?

You have to register for the Selective Service when you turn 18. It's not that you're joining the military, it's just so they have a database in case we ever reinstitute the draft. You can do it online or there's a form at the post office. It's not a big deal, every 18 year old male has to do it.

U must register for the draft. If u don't Your a worthless piece of dung. Its time for u to stop living off of ur parents and fight for your country. Be happy that theres a possiblility that you wont have to serve in many countrys throughout the world its mandatory.

It's probably a selective service registration card. Beause you're between the ages of 18 and 25, you have to register. Jus don't check any of the boxes for preferred service.

LOL you are either full of it, or it is a scam. Why not scan it into your computer, post it on a website, and give us the link to read it and then give you a better answer? Take it to a recruiter, I bet he laughs in your face. UNLESS your on DEP, then who knows.... show us the letter, please.

Ignore it. Also, you can contact you local media. This has happened in the past with some over zealous recruiters. I don't remember the details, but it had something to do with missing an appointment set by a US official, or some wierd law that was being bent fairly far out of normal range.

i would contact the media, and show them the letter. They will eat this up.
