computer question help pt 2?

hey it's me again, i'm kind of new to computers and have another question.

What are software applications? the definition of one. What are some good ones, and the main features of them?

i want to learn a lot about computers and was just wondering on some of the basic stuff as well

Software applications are programs that you install on your computer...like Windows for example. It is a really large software application that allows you to use other software applications.

There are many good software applications out there. The problem with defining a "good" one is the fact that it really depends on your use. If you are planning on using your computer for only internet. Then you could say that Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Netscape or many other Web browsers are good programs. However other things like a Chess game would do you no good.

Here are some basics for if you are going to use your computer to surf the internet.

1. Make sure that you have a good antivirus, (Trend PC-cillin, Norton, McAfee etc.) Without one you are vulnerable to attacks from viruses on the internet and on disks.

2. Make sure you have a firewall somewhere either in your computer or in a router. This will help prevent someone from hacking into your system and stealing your personal information.

3. Protect yourself from spyware. Spyware causes advertisement popups and will slow your computer down. Install a good antispyware tool to help with this problem. (Ad-Aware SE, Spybot: Search and destroy) Both can be found at http://www.download.com

4. When checking your e-mail...if you don't recognize the sender....DONT OPEN IT.

If you are unsure about something that is on your computer. Ask someone that is computer savvy. Most of the time they will be more than willing to help.
