It is very common to use two or more medications together to treat Bipolar disorder. Often, the compound effect the two med's have is what will help treat the person.
I am Bipolar and have been medicated for over twenty years. Periodically, the med's need readjusted or changed. I am currently taking three medications with fair success.

They are used for the same thing and I don't think it is a good idea that you are taking them both, Lithium must be monitored to make sure you have the right amount if you have too much you could become very ill. Lithium has many side effects and you must have regular blood tests to measure the levels. it is prescribed for bipolar. Depakote which is also called Valproic acid is also prescribed for Bipolar it is an anti manic. and also an anticonvulsant. it has fewer side effects and unlike lithium does not need to have the levels monitored. often an antidepressant is prescribed with the Valproic Acid (depakote.) the Depakote, reduces your manic moods, and The antidepressant would elevate your depression. same results. It's okay to take what you were prescribed but did your Dr. explain the dangers involved when you are taking lithium? You should ask him.

Hmmmm........Well, sometimes lithium alone does not help so another med is used to compliment the lithium. Do you have bipolar? The lithium helps to cut the aggression and irrability whereas the depacote doesn't. I have a friend on both.
Also, depacote causes hair loss and weight gain so be warned.

Something to consider. I am not sure what dose of the Lithium that is being used, but if it is a higher dose, the Depakote could be used to off-set the side effects of the Lithium. With Lithium, there is a high risk of developing toxicity to the drug... even with normal use of the medication... it can still potentially build up. Depakote is also used for seizures, which is one of the most common side effects associated with Lithium toxicity. Just something to consider..... also, I would suggest talking to your pharmacist, or better yet, the MD that prescribed the medications.

Depacote treats mania, which is a component of manic depression. Lithium treats mood swings.
