There's a local event coming to my area that will microchip my dog for only $20 (they're very reputable and it's a special offer kind of thing). I've been considering this because I love my dog so much and if he was lost, I'd definitely want him found and brought back to us. A friend of mine bought a dog from a breeder a few years back and said he came microchipped but they never activated it because there was some sort of monthly or yearly charge to keep it active. I guess kinda like lo-jack for your dog or something. Does anyone know if that's true? I thought microchipping was just a "tag" placed under their skin that vets offices and shelters and the like can scan to locate info. Does anyone know?

Thanks. It didn't sound right to me that you'd pay a monthly or yearly fee. I understand the registration fee but the other part didn't make much sense. My dog's a good dog and if even if he gets out, he rarely goes far but you never know!!

I work with a rescue and we chip all of the dogs that are in our program.
In addition, all of my dogs are mircrochipped with Home Again Microchips. There is another company - Avid.
Home again is changing the way they run their program and they can't seem to decide if they are going to charge a one time fee (which is what we have through the rescue and what I had for my dogs) or a monthly fee.
This is a great service in case your dog ever gets out or slips his or her collar. The more ways your dog can be identified and returned to you, the better. The best bet you have is keeping a collar on your dog with a tag. However, some dogs can slip the collar and get out. It happens all the time.
Rescues, shelters and vets scan the dogs when they come in to see if the dog is chipped. I can't tell you how many times we have reunited dogs with families who thought their dog was lost forever all because the dog was chipped.
If you have the opportunity to chip your dog, I highly encourage you to do so. It's just another insurance policy to help get him or her home if he ever gets lost.

No, there is not usually a regular fee, only a small registration fee when you frst register it. This puts the number in a database that people call when they find a microchipped pet. Microchipping is a great way to identify an animal because it is PERMANENT. You will not regret having your dog microchipped - it's safe and fairly inexpensive, and the $20 for a chip is an excellent deal!

its very sturdy in case your going to be vacationing and/or have a puppy that would get remote from you at the moment and then. that is in common words a passive technique of identity although. which signifies that you may't seem on the animal and comprehend he's been microchipped. With collars/tags, tattoos and ear tipping, although, you may seem on the puppy and comprehend he/she has been considered through a vet and may be placed via the tags and tattoo huge variety. (Ear tipping is typically considered in stray or feral cats that were spayed or neutered to regulate over inhabitants of pets.) that is extremely painless no matter if the needle is extremely large. that is extra uncomfortable for small dogs and some cats. The needle is about a 10-12 gauge and holds a small rice sized granule that has the microchip recorded into it. even as a scanner is moved over the realm the microchip huge variety comes up and may be tracked all the way down to the owner through technique of a rustic huge database. Like i discussed that is sturdy for vacationing, yet you should have your cat/canines positioned into the nationwide database otherwise in case you lose them on the vacation and they are not registered then you truly can don't have any way of having the puppy traced lower back to you even as or in the experience that they locate it. For interior of reach factors, microchipping is likewise a sturdy theory because maximum vet hospitals and animal administration officials carry a microchip scanner. yet when your canines has no identity as to which health facility he is going then the officer could have a not person-friendly time monitoring down the vendors. you extremely pick a collar and tags! it would want to also be sturdy only in case the collar and tags fall off, yet again you pick to have him registered with the nationwide database and that i trust that is round 40 5$ perhaps more low priced.

Your friend is only partially correct.
There are two charges - one for inserting the chip (very small and the dog will barely feel it) and one for registering.
This is indeed a "tag" placed under the skin (sometimes even done by breeders) on theback of the neck. There's one spot for dogs (to make scanning easier). It should take mere seconds for a vet to insert.
The second fee is the activation fee. This is a ONE-TIME charge, not monthly or annual. I use AVID. They are the best known in the U.S. They charge only $18.50 to register. If you move, just update them, but that will cost $6. Please note that different chips might not be recognized by all scanners. That is, there is no universal scanner at present. Sticking with one of the most popular chip makers, such as AVID (or one that your local vet recommends), is best.
To me, spending $38.50 is worthwhile. You have both a financial and emotional investment in your dog, so spending $38.50 to ensure that your pet can be returned to you if he gets lost somehow is very worthwhile.
Therefore, I applaud you for thinking of micro-chipping your pet. I hope you do it! I provided the link to AVID below.

Hi!
I would definitely recommend microchipping! both of my dogs are microchipped and also wear collars with tags. microchipping is a one off cost of actually getting the microchip implanted under the dogs skin in the nape of the neck. it is a tiny chip covered in silicone. it is painless for the dog and soooo beneficial!
the cost that would most likely come with the chip is a one off council registration fee. In australia, all dogs have to be microchipped and council reggo'd. here it costs $60 for the council reggo for life.(so, only one payment for the whole life of ur dog) this means pretty much that u have micro'd ur dog and they have the up to date details which appear on the chip. for example, when the chip is scanned it will come up with:
dogs name:
address:
secondary address:
owners name:
owners phone number:
secondary phone number:
the secondary details are a person who is close to u who can be reached if u cant.
good luck and i hope u do decide to microchip ur pup! =)

My dog came microchipped, and we were given the paperwork to register her particular number under our name and address. There hasn't been any sort of monthly charge, and it isn't like lo jack. They can't use a sattelite to track her when she gets out or anything, it just works more like a bar code at the grocery store. If she ends up in a shelter or something, they can scan her and my info will come up. Simple as that.

All four of my dogs have microchips, there is no monthly charge, it is the best thing you can do for a one time fee for those you love. You now know that breeder should be reported for lying that he did it in the first place

When you get a dog microchipped, you have to pay a one time lifetime registration fee. I use Home Again microchips on all of my dogs, and I think that it is about $20 to permanently register them with the AKC Companion Animal Recovery program. I would assume that it is the same with other microchip companies.
