The function of leaves is photosynthesis.

1. Both types of leaves have mesophyll layers that are full of chloroplasts.
2. Both types have stomata to allow exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen.
3. Both have vascular bundles to bring the water for photosynthesis and to carry off the food that is made during photosynthesis.
4. And both have air spaces between the mesophyll cells to facilitate movement of materials to and from the cells.
5. In addition, the leaves are flat to expose the greatest surface area to the sun, and they are supported on stems in order to orient the leaves toward the sunlight.
