The functions of the stems are to support the leaves in the light and to transport food and water through the plant. Stems also store food and water.

1. Both monocot and dicot stems have vascular tissue to transport food from the green parts of the plant to the parts that need food and to transport water from the root system up to the shoot system.
2. Stems are usually upright in order to hold the leaves up in the light. Dicot stems are generally stronger than monocot stems because the vascular cambium in dicot stems helps them add on more woody xylem.
3. Stems of both types have pith and cortex cells which store food and water.
