The scrap book idea sounds really nice! I think you should do that. But don't feel bad if she doesn't want to look through it right away, it will probably be too painful for a while. I know how much it hurts to lose a pet. My little Pomeranian died last summer, and it still hurts, especially when I see another one that looks like her. But she will treasure the memories of a scrapbook, I'm sure. How sweet of you to think of that idea! :)

How about a nice frame with an angel on it or a inscription with a picture of her dog in it and she can have his collar and a piece of his fur tucked inside. It will be a nice memorial for her. In the spring buy her a rosebush as a reminder that Bill will always be with her in spirit. Here is a poem that I print out and put with the picture of the pet it is a reminder of the love we have for these furry little angels. She is lucky to have you to help her through this sad time.
The Rainbow Bridge
There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth.
It is called the Rainbow bridge because of its many colours.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is always food and water and warm spring weather.
The old and frail, and animals are young again.
Those who are maimed are made whole again.
They play all day with each other.
There is only one thing missing. There are not with their special person who loved them on Earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when suddenly one looks up! The ears are up! The eyes staring! And this one runs suddenly from the group!
You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you will take him or her in your arms and embrace.
Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

Putting a beloved family pet down is harder than some can imagine. Offer to go with her for support the day she does it. Are you going to leave his body for the vet to dispose of or are you going to bury Billy in the family yard (I lived on a farm and we did this with our family pets growing up). If Billy can be buried at home, offer to do it (she will find it hard) and make a colorful stepping stone to mark the spot. If he will be left at the vets office a scrapbook would be nice or frame one of her favorite pics of her and Billy. If there isn't a pic of them together, is there time to take one? It's nice that you are recognizing how hard this is as many don't and I think she will appreciate that the most!

Do whatever you think Mom would like, a picture of bill in younger days in a pet frame, a card, some flowers, a scrapbook.
Give to an animal charity, like the local pet shelter or the ASPCA.
One thing you do not want to do, unless you discuss it with Mom, and that is to show up with a puppy. Most people want to wait awhile before they get another pet, they might feel guilty about a "replacement pet".
Sorry about Bill, my pet doggie died almost 30 years ago, and I still miss him dreadfully!

I am so sorry to hear about Big Bill. A card and scrapbook would be a very nice for your mom. I lost a pet last year and it is really hard. Especially if they were a big part of the family. They also sell gift baskets for people who have lost pets. My friend sent me one when i lost my cat Nyssa. I wish your mom luck. Take care.

I think that both of your ideas are wonderful. It is very difficult for people to lose a beloved pet. I'm sorry for your loss, and your mother's loss.

When i lost my cat when i was a teenager, my mother bought a rose for me that we planted in the garden in memory of her. it was a lovely gesture, and every time it flowered it reminded me of her.
perhaps you can do this for your mother?
