Roots absorb water and minerals, anchor the plant in the ground, store food and water, and supply support for the rest of the plant so it doesn't tip over.

1. Monocot and dicot roots both have vascular tissue to transport water and minerals within the plant.
2. Root hairs increase the surface area to enhance water absorption.
3. The monocot root has pith and cortex to store food and water. The dicot root has a large area of cortex to do the same thing.
