I see that you have data on all three partitions, so I don't know which one you want to install Ubuntu on since you have to wipe that partition. Unless you have 1GB+ of ram you will need also a swap partition, the general rule is 2X the amount of ram. If you want to keep all three partitions you'll need to resize them and add two more for Ubuntu. You can use the Gparted Live CD http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php , it works good, though make sure you backup your most precious data up first, because I hear rumors that occasionally something goes wrong in resizing partitions, though it has always worked flawless for me.
Ubuntu will automatically setup Windows in the Grub boot menu so that you can dual boot. When you are happy with your partition setup, choose the partition you want to wipe, you better know which one. On that third screen shot screen choose both / Mount Point and check the reformat box on the desired partition. I Then choose the appropriate partition for swap, if you set one up. can't remember the next screen. I think you leave the defaults, ext3 file system is a fine one, on the next screen.

Format hda2 into a linux format - it won't hurt your windows install since that is on the other partition. You will lose everything on that partition though, so make sure it is empty.

Your boot record is going to change too.. at that point it will ask you what OS you want to boot. I suggest you stick with the windows boot manager and have that ask if you want to boot windows normally or choose ununtu instead.

If you are only using Linux to play around with and don't plan to get serious use out of it - I suggest installing it on a virtual machine. You can get virtual PC free from microsoft and it will create hard drive files on your PC and you install the OS just like normal, not taking a chance at hosing your current install or boot record.. if you aren't comfortable with trying to fix that.

I definitely have carried out this two times with 2 desktops with out issues. The version i like ultimate is Linux Mint 7 significant version. It installs immediately and detects your hardware. It has an extremely difficulty-free to apply application supervisor (you place a verify mark interior the field for the applying and it downloads and installs immediately). Linux Mint 7 is as solid as any abode windows gadget for ease of use. surprisingly lots the comparable for Ubuntu 9.04 as Mint different than it is not as soft as Mint. a thank you to get the two version: acquire the ISO document and burn a picture to a CD utilising BurnCDCC and you have gotten a "stay CD". at the same time as abode windows is working insert the stay CD and a menu will open up. you are able to decide on "deploy interior of abode windows", decide on yourcontinual to place in into, the folder length (suggested is 15 gigabytes), enter a username and password then your gadget will reboot. persist with the guidelines to place in into your favourite folder (interior of abode windows). it is all automatic and takes approximately 30 minutes plus it does not harm your abode windows deploy in any way. once you initiate your laptop interior the destiny you have gotten the ability to decide on Linux or wait some seconds and abode windows will initiate often. I definitely have Ubuntu 9.04 on one laptop and Linux Mint 7 significant version on yet another laptop. the two artwork superb yet i like Mint extra sensible . There are links under. desire this facilitates, Al
