It is a cold sore, caused by HSV-1 (herpes simplex virus). The other person who answered is correct, in that 80% of people have been exposed. If you have had only one break out, I would not worry. If it happens again, call your family practice doctor and ask for a prescription for Valtrex (2g 2x/day for 1day). It is the strongest antiviral out there and works more quickly than anything else (an obligate chain terminator that halts the virus 100% of the time). Over-the-counter creams, etc. only improve healing by 1/2 a day so they are a waste of money. If you start taking Valtrex at the first time you feel the cold sore coming (usually a tingling or itching around the mouth), roughly 20% of the time you can avoid the outbreak altogether. If it is still bad now, you can call for Valtrex tomorrow. You can pass the virus on when you kiss, so you may want to hold off kissing anyone until it is healed, especially children.
