This is going to sound very dumb but bear with me. In June my car was illegally moved by a construction compant without informing either myself or the police. I reported the car stolen. I found the car a month later 15 blocks away from where it was stolen. At the same time, my mom's car died and she needed a vehicle, so I drove it home and its been there ever since. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I didnt take the car off the stolen car report. Do I have to have the vehicle with me to take it off the hot sheet? Or can I just give information.

Don't know if you need to have the vehicle with you to take it off the hot list. But you need to do it. Call them and ask what you need to do to get it straightened out, they will tell you what you need to do and what to bring with you.

Even after it's been recovered, they'll sometimes pull you over for driving a stolen vehicle. Had a friend that had his vehicle stolen, the police recovered the vehicle, and he got pulled over for suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle a week later since it was still showing up on some of the lists. They got it all straightened out right there, but if it's still on the hot list, it will make things much more complicated.

You should inform the Police, your vehicle is still under "stolen list", any person find inside the vehicle will be arrested for theft of vehicle. Just tell the Police the truth, how the vehicle was "stolen" and how you found it.

call the police and let them you know you found it...then explain that the company towed your car illegally and press charges. This is totally unacceptable..as they just moved the car to another location.

Now the question is...did they do it or did someone else do it? Do you know the mileage you had on the car before it was missing...is there substantially more miles on it then before? I can't see a construction company just hooking on to your car then moving it to another location. If they had it towed I'd think it'd have been in a tow lot.

Think about it...

Call the police, on the regular business line, and let them know that you found your car and have already recovered it. They might give you a little bit of crap about recovering it yourself with first notifying them first, but at least your doing it now.

You should just be able to call them and give them all of the information that they gave you on the original report, they might want to send an officer out to verify it, but who knows.

I've seen enough episodes of COPS to know that you shouldn't have recovered it yourself without first notifying the police first that you found it...

Call the police and tell them you found it. BTW that would be bad if that wasn't your car but a similar one.
