My 18 week old cocker spaniel has a cough fro 2 mornings and evenings. We went to our local vet the first morning, no temperature, chest clear. He is eating but the cough makes him retch. he vomited this morning after breakfast. (but ate another meal OK staright afterwards) does he need a scope? or will it settle in a few days? Surely, if he had something stuck in his throat, he would cough all the time, wouldn't he?
He has had his 2 injections, but needs a KC booster, due as soon as he is better!

It sounds like your dog has canine cough (kennel cough) even though you have him vaccinated they can still catch it but its not as bad. They usually cough for about a week and then it goes on its own. If you don't like the sound of it you can treat them with human cough medicine benalyn works best or if it gets worse take him back to the vets. Keep him in your house while he has this cough as he will spread it round if he goes out to the park or even down the street!!!

If you are worried about something stuck in throat put some olive oil, or almond oil in some milk and get him to drink. The oil will help the object slip down and the milk will stick on the side to help ease the coughing. If it is something stcuk they dont cough all the time if it doesnt budge. Be careful to keep the dog from getting a cold as they can die keep the dog warm too. It is so wrong to think that it has a coat it should be warm.
It sound like he may have something he needs to cough out as it is not digesting. Bones should be given to dogs. It is only for dogs when there is no food around so they bury the bones to soften them. The easy digestable foods like rice and bread is good for dogs and they love it with a bit chicken stock or lard rice mix with a bit veg and small amount of meat but not meat every day. Tin dog foods are not good to give all the time nor are treats as they can shorten their lives. Fresh is good fruit etc.. like we they cant digest aritificial foods.
See another vet if need be to find out the cause as not all vets know everything. PDSA is usually good as they dont profit and so care more.
Sorry to hear this hope youfind away. Try also consulting medical herbalist as dogs have similar conditions to us and only have to take one third of the dosage in herbal remedies. I had a great herbalist i always went to but are now closed but I read a lot of books and so should you and consult more natural solutions.
Best of luck
Hope this has helped

Did your vet feel his throat. It might be kennel cough. Your vet should have a really good feel around his voice box to see if he can get the dog to cough. Like humans, the cough could be based in his throat, rather than in his chest. I would try and find a different vet.

coughing in dogs can be a sign of a heart condition i would get his heart checked in a few days if it hasnt cleard up and keep him in and dont get him excited as this may bring on more coughing spirts, you can give him baby benalyn the dose would be double the dose for a 2 year old, hope he is ok

Hiya, my Yorkie sometimes gets a dry cough doing cold/hot weather. I recommend Benelyn for children, half a tea spoon twice a day. Its completely fine for small dogs, and works brilliantly.

Yikes! Coughing is not normal in dogs, I would be looking for a new vet.
