You can get this dog prelimmed now. You can x-ray hips and elbow's and send those off to the OFA for pre-lim evaluations. You then will need to repeat the x-rays no earlier than 24 months for final OFA ratings. Join a local obedience club for training. Start him in obedience, Schutzhund or conformation. Depending on the bloodline, he will mature at different ages. My DDR boy did not fully fill out until he was almost 3. I have a West German show girl that looked like a mature ***** at around 10 months of age. Some lines mature earlier than other's.

I also have a German Shepard who is 8 months old and the Vet told us to wait until he is 2 years old. At that age you can have their hips certified and that will help with puppy sales. As far as training, we have been training him since he was 3 months. They are very smart and catch on quickly and need to be stimulated constantly. We talked to dog handlers that work in the military or with police about triaing, and also did research on the net. We gathered a lot of information and made it our own to suit our lifestyle.

They can actually breed at just a few months but usually it's best to wait about a year. Although they are already mature they may not have sucessful sperm. Why have some one pay for a stud thats the female isn't going to catch from? At a year they will be fully developed and should be sucessfull.

I am a professinal dog trainer and behaviorist. I can help with training.

Dogs can breed at six months but in the wild they do not have a chance untill they are two.

Most pro's agree on one year.
