Wow, these other posters are not too bright. HIV-1 used to be called SIV-1, or Simian Immunodeficiency Virus. This type kills chimpanzees. The other, HIV-2 used to be called SIV-2, and it kills Green Macabay monkeys. Humans have acquired both kinds, but HIV-1 is more deadly to us. If SIV-2 were to ever get into a chimpanzee, however, he would not die. Likewise, if SIV-1 were to ever get into a Green Macabay monkey, he would not die. Interesting, huh?

Not a simple yes or no question. HIV causes death in some monkeys, particularly those native to Asia, but not in others, particularly those from Africa.
