I swear, I'm trying to be polite when I ask people questions that others might easily assume, but by asking the question, people get so easily offended. For example, instead of assuming a religion believes something is true, I approach someone and *ask* if it's true, but they get all defensive as if I had some underlying motive or hidden agenda when I had zero intent on anything but satisfying my own knowledge. Is there a better way to approach the situation? Is there a way I can understand how something works or the beliefs of an individual without offending them? So far, I'm thinking not.

Yup, people these days are so easily offended.
What I've found to be helpful, is to preclude my Q
by saying something like "I don't have an agenda,
and I'm not trying to set you up. I just want to know,
because I don't."
Statements like these which reveal your honest
intent, can work to ease the situation.
Hope this helps.

Part of the problem is political correctness. People are so ready to take offense to ANYTHING nowadays.

Where religion is concerned...so many people can't separate their own belief system from cold hard fact. For example, if you ask "Does Catholic doctrine dictate that Catholics must worship Mary?" You will get 100 angry responses from people who are NOT Catholic, claiming Catholics DO worship Mary, and are all going to hell, and Catholicism is a cult.

You weren't looking for their opinons...you were looking for facts...which they can't possibly give you because they headed into that conversation aggressively, never having read anything from the Catholic doctrine at all.

After seeing your question I looked at other questions you asked previously and you chose as the best answer the person that caused you to ask this question. And to tell you the truth I think that was a pretty goofy question and I can understand the response you got. So why don't you not be so thin skinned and don't ask goofy questions if the answers upset you so much.

I agree.. There are some who like to be wise cracks.. There are others that are sincere.. You will get both .. That's with any question! I can't help you with asking but when I am answering I look at their aviator(click on it) and it will display their questions and their answers to others question. If they are a wise crack I don't even bother with answering their question.. I move on..
Good luck to you.. Chin up.......

Hahaha, I thought I'm the only one with that problem. I really know how you feel.

What I do is, I TOTALLY IGNORE THEM. So don't let them bother you. And also, let's just reconstruct our questions without making it sound like it's offensive.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.. :-)
