i dont know if you have heard this story or not, but back when civilization was forming, there was a mass of illiterate people with hardly any education, except to work as laborers. a few smart, educated people decided that they wanted to take control of these masses for their own benefit. they saw the lightning and the storms... they saw how powerful they were and how it frightened them and the other people. they decided to turn these storms into something made by a god when it was angry. they told these uneducated people that every time it stormed, the "god" was punishing them.
over time, the "god" took shape and form, and the "leaders" (who invented this god) grew smarter, and a religion was born.... im not saying it was christianity... but it was a religion. the leaders didnt want anyone not believing in their new god, because they liked how powerful they themselves had become.
there is no "god". there are just people out there who want many people to believe in it. and because, over time, as more and more people believed in the god, the god and the leaders grew stronger. people truly started to believe that this god was real.
now to answer your question. its not god that punishes.. its the leaders that punish to make sure you stay a believer, so they can control you.
now, do you want to be led and controlled? or do you want to think for yourself and follow your own path?

Answer 1 for Question 1 : because we sin.
Answer 2 of Question 2 : Because God simply said in his commandments that "Thou Shalt Not Have No Other gods Before Me" and "Thou Shalt Not Worship Any Graven Image"
God is the God of Abraham of Jacob and of Isaac, the Jehovah God,the Almighty God,the only true Living God,the God of David and the God of Moses.
God is not Allah,Bhudda, the Wicca goddess or any other graven image that was created by man to worship and feel comfortable living in sin.

Because he told you there werent any and yet you still think there is. Its sort of a trust issue. You can live a moral life and still not trust God. Plus if you look at his point of view, he created the world and wants the credit. Another point is that you are basically asking a barbie doll for help with your finances or whatever, she wont help you nor can she hurt you if you dont pay amage every so often.

First of all God punishes no one, we punish ourselves and each other. You are right God presents himself any many different ways, but this does not mean he is a different person. How you believe in him is up to you. The only thing God ask is for you to believe in him. It says in the bible God will forgive you of any sin except one. This one sin is not believing in him. Think about it! If you do not believe in him he can not forgive you of any other sin.

Punishment is the inevitable result of sin. Destructive
behavior draws one to the destructive, recycling aspect of Creation. But the spirit has a will to survive. And if it gets caught up in these forces, it ain't pretty!

Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender unto demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures.

Humans wrote the Bible, and humans punish. They only attribute that to God to excuse their own bad behavior.

because one of His Commandments states that "Thou shalt not have other gods before me".
just like with your earthly father, if you break the rules, you get punished.
not a difficult concept really.
