Campaigns by new bands trying to get into the charts are really viral marketing - think of Gnarls Barkley for example, or Arctic Monkeys.
They set up websites / myspace accounts and got to No. 1 in the singles chart with no traditional marketing, just electronic word-of-mouth (i.e. people emailing each other about it).
That answers most of your questions, except what can we learn from it.
That last question is too vague, but if you mean what we can learn from the point of view of society, then we can learn that communication remains extremely important in social creatures such as humans, and the technology of communications will continue to have wide ranging effects on the way we interact.

When they say "viral" that means as in how a virus behaves. When a cold virus invades your body in begins to replicate itself rapidly and grows wildly on it's own. A good example of a viral marketing campaign online would be offering a discount to a buyer if they would refer your business to 5 people.
