They use to all be paid the same, but now it depends on who you work for. I think easiest is relative. I did both bananas and lychee's near Cairns and the farm I worked at sounded a lot better than some of the other fruit farms with the same fruit to pick.
When I was doing fruit, I was classified as a farm hand and getting paid about $10.50 an hour. (I really miss that job! Long hours but a great boss... how many bosses would tell you off for working unpaid during lunch???)

grapes pay well and are not to hard ..no real stretching or bending..most grapes are picked by machine nowadays but an excellent crop destined for fine wines will pay well as the owners will want the grapes picked with extra care..apart from that cherries even though a small season pay well also.It is getting harder to find work picking as machinery is taking over so search the smaller orchards or vineyards first and find a good contractor that wont rob you blind ....best to go through our centrelink agency and avoid the contractors altogether. good luck... you will meet some top people.

bananas are hard, hard work. REALLY hard work. it's good to go with something you get paid by the weight, watermelons or pumpkins are good but it's hard on your back. anything that is a ground crop is hard on the back, like strawberries. try something like apples or peaches. it all depends where you are going and what season it is. have a look at the harvest trail website or when you get to Australia your hostel should be able to give you a harvest guide. Some regional hostels also have a deal with local farmers to hook up travellers with work.

At the moment it is bananas because we had cyclone Larry in north Queensland and it wiped out all the banana crops - we have had to start again and they are desperate for banana pickers because all the original ones left when the cyclone left them jobless due to no bananas. There is accommodation available at a very low price. You will have such a great time here, your money will go so much further and theres so much to see and do. i2canchange@yahoo.com
