Here is what I would tell your teacher. Why do they have to benefit us? They are a living, breathing living beings. Why do they need to benefit humans? What is that? What kind of teacher is she? Penguins are an incredible animal. They do not have to serve a purpose for us. We are killing them and taking their food. We should be benefiting them and helping them. Without us they would be just fine. Penguins are not for us to look at in Zoos and gawk over. They have every right to be on this planet like we do. They don't have to benefit us!

This once again shows how man does not care about what else is out there or what we hurt for our own benefit.

they're animals and they must be part of a certain food web. Perhaps they are prey to polar bears, killer whales, and penguins keep the fish population in line. Just think, penguins do what every animals do; they help the ecosystem or in this case the arcti ecosystem. If they weren't there a lot of arctic predators would die b/c they can't find good prey. This would cause the arctic ecosytem to die and only be dependent on fish. I hope this helps, I just thought about it, and I hope it makes sense.

That's a tough one. People don't eat them, and don't directly use any environmental services performed by penguins. Penguins do prey on fish, and you could conceivably make the argument that they are preventing certain species of fish from becoming overly abundant, which would wreak havoc on the prey items of those fish. However, I think you could make the equally plausible argument that by eating fish, penguins are dwindling the number of fish available to us. Heh heh, these things get complicated.

The real reason to protect penguins is that they are remarkable, beautiful creatures, and our world would not be the same without them.

they are like frogs ,monitors of environmental conditions
when there are a lot of frogs around ,we know that that Eco -system is ok.they are a major component in the food chain.snakes ,wader birds ,eat frogs ,frogs eat a lot of insects etc

Penguins are similar ,they eat a lot of fish .so if there are a lot of penguins ,there are a lot of fish to support them

orcas ,and sharks eat a lot of penguins (as well as seals)
so there is a of food for them as well.

Albatrosses eat penguin chicks and so on

so many penguins ,and seal and that Eco sytem is OK
less penguins and we should worry ,as to why ??
is there less fish ,-why??? etc.
the sharks and the Orcas are hard to see or keep track of

but penguins are very visible ,so are seals and frogs you can hear all over the place (but not in antarctica)
so these kind of animals help us by monitoring the health of the Environment

apart from that they are too cute and make us smile
that is worth a lot these days

They don't help us directly, but they help the environment. They eat fish, which helps from over population. And they are food for killer whales. What would Shamu's distant relatives eat without penguins!?! Plus, they make the Artic seem a lot more fun.

Just last week I saw a penguin helping an elderly lady cross the street. Does that count?

Fishing to save penguins????? That would only bite into their food source! They do not help us directly, but are part of a natural food chain...

They contribute to the delicate balance ot the Antarctic ecosystem. One animal eats another that eats another and etc. , to reduce population influxes, also each providing another animal as a potential source of food.

Well, I guess it doesn't matter since we keep killing them off and polluting our own environment. Seriously, what species destroys its own habitat? Even my dog craps in a different area than he sleeps.

yes they are very cute, but i dunno bout food? i've never eaten penguin. but maybe its good? anyway, they help keep the arctic fish population at a reasonable number, they provide food for bigger animals. basically all animals help to keep the Animal population reasonable
