Get on the Do Not Call registry--I don't remember where it is--check consumer advocacy sites. But I did sign up for it and it cut way down on telemarketers.
There's also a feature on some phones called Privacy Director that doesn't accept calls from "unidentified" numbers (like the ones from most call centers) unless the person on the other end hears you identify yourself and accept the call. This was a total pain when I was working in a call center, because I was NOT a telemarketer--I was calling about delays in service and setting appointments for service, stuff like that--but Privacy Director would stop me from calling all the time.
It works!

The Do Not Call Register
==================
The Do Not Call Register will allow individuals to put their names on the Register if they do not want to receive certain unsolicited telemarketing calls. The Register is designed to ensure and to protect the privacy of individuals and telephone numbers and provide an opportunity to opt-out of receiving telemarketing calls.
But:
When will the Register be operational?
The Register is expected to be operational in May 2007.

i usually just say, "hang on a moment please" and then just walk away from the phone. they eventually get annoyed and realise you aint coming back, and hang up.
doesnt really work well unless you dont mind having your phone busy for a while though
doesnt really stop them from ringing though. there is supposed to be a do not call register coming to australia, but i havent really heard anything more about it since they announced it. wouldnt have a clue how to get on it or anything.

Get a private phone number, dont list it in the telephone directory and don't fill in your phone number on any surveys, they pay companies doing surveys to get your telephone details. It's so dodgy.

Go to www.donotcall.gov and sign up for the list. It will take a little while to take affect but it works. I'm on it and they don't call.
