Larger dogs are prone to hip problems - sometimes if they have had a particuarlly rowdy time playing, they can pull a muscle and limp for a few days. Also, if he sleeps on that hip, it could be stiff. Try massaging the area, also you can give him a baby aspirin a day for the pain. A vet can prescribe anti inflammatory drugs like rimadyl for joint problems. Try a vet and see what they say. Good luck

I have a smaller dog, and we were having the same problem. We took her into the vet and got x-rays taken and the whole 9 yards. Turns out she's just faking, and the vet said it's a habit some dogs pick up. However, I suggest taking him to the vet. Dogs can get hip displasia, especially older dogs.

Take him to the vet. Hip displacia is common in Large breeds.
I have 2 rotties myself, mind you they just turned 3.
I give them Food for bone and joints in the winter.
A friend of mine has an old lab that has very bad arthritis. He started giving her supplements for joints.(for humans) and he says the dog isn't the same. Some days she couldn't walk and now...she plays with the younger ones and can keep up. I would definitely talk to your vet about it.

You need to see your vet to find if it is a hip problem (joint) or a muscle problem. Rotties are prone to hip problems, have you ever had them xrayed? This is why it's important to have the sire and dam xrayed before you consider breeding, as well as asking the breeder how the hips are prior to buying the puppy. It will save you alot of heart ache later on. Cheers Bogey

It could be the cruciate ligament in the knee.
If the dog keeps his paw off the ground when he walks I would
have him checked. This is common in large dogs. The only cure is an operation. My 120 LB Lab had this problem and he is fine now.

A vet would have to examine him to be sure but it is possible that he has hip displacia, arthritis, or (let's hope not) Osteosacoma (which is bone cancer. Please take your dog to the vet and get the exact diagnosis ASAP. I hope it is the simplest of all. Good luck.

You should take him to the vet to get him checked. Could be he's getting arthritis and if so, he can be put on meds that will totally control his pain. If it's something else, you need to find that out, too.

Wait for a bit(half a day at most)...if nothing changes take him to the vet. It might need attention to prevent future pain.
