I want to make and frost a cookie to look like a basketball. What color/colors would I use. Orange seems just too bright.

I recommend using a gel food colouring. You can probably find them at hobby stores near where they keep the cake decorating supplies. They may have several different shades of orange to choose from, but if not, get the closest orange you can find. If it is too bright, add just a small amount of red colouring and if it is too dark, add a small amount of yellow.

If you don't want to make them orange at all, you could use the colours of your favourite basketball team (or the favourite team of whomever you are baking them for).

Use orange, but mute it down with some darker red....that should get it for you. Put a little frosting to the side and experiment with the colours like a painters pallet until you get what you want.

Is brown an option in colors of frosting? That could work - at least in my mind's eye it looks okay.
