I am a childcare provider, this child just recently came into my care. I care for him afterschool and on sch. off days. Currantly he's suspended for fighting. Last week, I put him in time out for slapping a child and he cried loudly, uncontrollably, and through and outragious tantrum. As soon as I came to speak to him, and find out why he was screaming that way, he punched himself in the nose, blood was streaming everywhere, I rushed him into the bathroom, and called his mother, everytime I left out of the bathroom to console the other children in my care, when I returned there was more blood splatter, all over the bathroom walls, floor, him etc. (It was as if he was causing more blood!) I was horrified. I spoke to his mother about taking him to a doctor, she acts as if this is a daily occurance and says that he "is being dramatic". Today at movie time, he just wet himeself. I am beside myself. I am at total odds. I believe that something is mentally wrong with him. Help.

Hi Ovrmyhead,

There is something SERIOUSLY WRONG! I hate to say it but I would suggest contacting Child Protective Services and reporting this issue. There could very well be that this child is developmentally delayed in some areas but this sounds to me more like the child is traumatized by abuse and needs help and is acting out in the only way he knows how. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING DOCUMENTED as to what has been happening while the child is in your care. For example what triggers this behaviour when in your care, the dates and times of the event, how often the parents were told with dates included and the response of the parents when told, how you took care of the issue while in your care and or before the parents came to pick up their child.

Child Protective service will want all this from you and make sure you make extra copies of what you have written. Also continue documenting every time something like this happens despite the repetitivness of it and follow the information given above. This child needs and deserves to be helped what ever the underlining issues are. Best of luck!, I hope all works out for the best.

Sincerely,

Alice H.

As a childcare provider you have a duty to report any type of abuse. Clearly this mother is neglecting the child. This is not normal behavior. SOMETHING is upsetting for him to be hitting and self damaging to himself. Talk to your administrator. If you home sit, contact your local Health Services.
YOU, may be the person who can help this boy.

This kid sounds very disturbed and troubled. If the Mother is in a denial state, and won't act on this, you have the right to call DOCS to bring this to their attention, and to protect the other children in your care. None of this is "normal",I hope you're documenting his injuries and behavior etc, this mother seems the type to blame you for the abuse and outburst's etc. Take care. SW RNP

Something is definitely wrong with this child, and if the mother shrugs it off, theres a good chance she is the problem or she wants to hide the problem. I would report it asap!

Well I suggest you report this mom's behavior about the issue to CPS. On a personal level I think he is posessed or opressed, but that's just my opinion. Maybe talk to his school counselor.

Sounds like child abuse. I wouldn't watch him anymore. You don't need the risk.
