Anorexics actually take up more treatment dollars than obese people... per individual, treating anorexia takes longer, costs more, and has poorer outcomes. It is more prevalent than you might think.
But, I agree, obese people face more stigma and blame.

Because, at a basic level, obesity is caused by a sedentry and oft assumed lazy lifestyle. Anorexia isn't, and doesn't suffer the social stigma as much. Even though both conditions are a result of an overabundance of cheap unhealthy food, anorexia is propagated by pressure on women (And also, increasing in recent trends) men to conform to the ideals of the perfect body through advertising and objectification. Personally I don't really have a problem with this- I think everyone should attain a healthy lifestyle and strong physique- But the balance swings too far when one is never satisfied with ones healthy body, causing anorexia. On the flipside, the vast amounts of addictive junk food cause people to lose control and become obese. People complain about treating obese people, and quite rightly so, because obesity is a result of a lack of self control. However, junk food IS addictive, and treatment is necessery to get these people back on track.

You are probably on the right track with the gluttony issue. There are plenty of things that they don't complain about, but obesity is always way up at the top. Ahhh, but then there is smoking as well. Do you really think the high taxes on tobacco go to health care? (NOT)

Because "thin" no matter how horrible is still preferable to an "obese" person.
It's sad and makes no sense....but that's the mixed-up world we live in.
