Hire a professional. They are trained in handling these matters much the same way a mechanic it trained in repairing your vehicle. You can take the advice of amateurs, but you will have limited results. There are ONLY THREE legitimate credit restoration companies in the United States. So do your DUE DILLIGENCE. I have written an article in my blog that will show you how to tell the legitimate companies from the scams and untrained. You can find the link at the bottom of this answer.

The procedure to remove an item off your credit history is in the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

You do not need to hire a lawyer or credit repair agency. Just follow the procedures. If the creditor does not remove the item, you can sue them in small claims court for $1000. I've done it myself and it's very easy to do. You just need to be sure to follow the procedures exactly.

1) Get a copy of your credit report at http://www.annualcreditreport.com.
2) Send a letter to the credit reporting agency(s) disputing the incorrect items.
3) Send a letter to the creditor demanding debt validation.
4) Wait 30 days.
5) File a small claims suit.

Contact me if you need more help/advice. I am not a lawyer or credit counselor.
