Check in your area to see if there's a liberal arts college that offers photography degrees. Get in contact with the professor, and ask them to pass on the word to their students; chances are, you'll be able to get a halfway decent photographer for practically free. Or, "hire" a few of them, and you'll have lots of options, in case some of them don't turn out well.

Find a college in your area that offers photography courses or a photography/graphic arts major. But we forwarned your request may be a bit like asking for the secret family recipe so you can bake the cake yourself....its a bit unrealistic. Instead, you might want to find some of the photographers in your area who freelance (usually you find these guys by word of mouth, but you can put an ad in the local paper). They will be more willing to put together a smaller album and still sell you the proof book to use as you see fit. Digital photography makes it much simpler to get tons of proofs...but dont be fooled.....an amateur may miss important shots you probably want someone who knows how to get around at the wedding without knocking things over and making a lot of noise while still getting the most important moments recorded ......post a note on the local community board and in the local parishes asking for help./information and referrals to people who are reasonable...good luck

Congratulations on your wedding!! I am getting married in March and was lucky enough to find someone to do this, kind of. He is going to give me two discs of the photos and give me tips on how to find a good quality place to print them for half the price he would charge. Anyway, I sat down and called a ton of Photographers and just asked different questions. When you call make sure you have your budget and the amount of time you want the photographer for. I found that if you just engage the vendors in conversation and be as real and laid back as can be they are a lot more respondent. That sounds ridiculously obvious but most of my vendors have told me how refreshing it is to talk to a bride that is not so uptight and crazy. This helped me to get a 70% discount on my photographer and get a ton of tips and deals from different people. Good Luck, also be sure to stick to your guns on the price - with my photographer he told me what he charged and I thanked him and hung up promptly - he called back and made a deal with me.

I had a friend's dad who is professional photographer but NOT a wedding photographer do our wedding. He gave me all the negatives and proofs.
You might be able to find through friends etc. someone like that who does professional work but won't try to make you buy pre-planned albums and pay extra for your negatives.
The idea of the college is great. Perhaps the professor would be interested as well.
Congrats!

Here's an idea. Put disposable cameras on the tables at the reception. Tell people to snap away! As for the wedding, just ask a family member who is a pretty good snap shot!

Well, first off it's all digital today so you would want the CD.... most professional photographer give you the CD as part of your package. Not sure where you live but I would call around.... just remember if you get an amateur- it may be cheap but your picture will not be as nice. Check local colleges and biz that are just starting out.

Are there any colleges that are local? See if there are any upperclassmen who are taking photography classes or are photography majors. Since they don't technically have a degree it could be cheaper than finding someone who has already started their own business or has even finished college. If not see if any friends or friends of friends have experiemented with photography at all. Good luck!

what area do you live in? i have a few friends that are willing to do that. i'd also check local schools to see if there's any photography students willing to do it... that's extra cash and practice for them. call photography studios and ask them, some might not advertise that but are willing to do it as well.
