I'm in New Jersey where it barely makes a difference. The RDA can only do a couple of things that the CDA can not do and there is virtually zero time savings realized with those procedures. More important than either CDA or RDA is the x-ray license. This can be a real time-saver in the course of a typical day.

If I was considering both a CDA and an RDA and ABSOLUTELY everything else was equal, I might give the RDA a very slight edge, but there are so many other factors that contribute to one being a qualified dental assistant, that I doubt this tiebreaker would make a difference in my final decision.

In other words, as far as I'm concerned, get the CDA and don't spend more money on a course for RDA certification. Get your x-ray license. Smile and mean it.

I am not a dentist, but I just wanted to comment that I have seen both CDA's and RDA's that are awful assistants. And I have seen assistants that were neither and were wonderful assistants. It is one thing to pass a written test, but totally different to be good at the hands on work. I personally don't think that the certification or registration has anything to do with what makes an assistant good.
