this stems from the fourth days that came between the crucifixion of Christ and the coming of the holy spirit on pentecost.

Ok, I've been around for many years, seen and heard a multitude of things, but this I have never heard of. Don't give me thumbs down, but I'm just curious, who's custom is this?

Thank you for the question and those who answered, I am now enlightened. I knew that 40 was significant in the Bible in many places, and I also knew about the 40 days between the Crucifixion and the Holy Ghost. I didn't know people celebrated 40 days after a death. Again, thanks for the knowledge.

This is a custom followed by Orthodox Christians, among others. See http://www.oca.org/QAindex-deathfunerals.asp?SID=3 for an explanation of origins of funeral customs in Orthodoxy. The 40 day period is one of those relics from the ancient numerology, when people believed certain numbers had special meaning. (In fact, wasn't it for 40 years that the Jews were roaming the desert?) Today, Christians who follow these customs do not do so for any pagan or astrological reason, it's just a nice custom.

I know Jews also have an official 40 day mourning period. Roman Catholics may traditionally have had one too, but I'm not sure about this.

The 40 days after death celebration in the Philippines is supposed to emulate the ascencion of Christ 40 days after his resurrection. There is usually prayer or even a mass followed by a feast. However, this is in error because Christ actually ascended to heaven 43 days after he died from the cross. I have been advocating to correct the error but nobody is listening. However, in the event someone in my family passes on (which is inevitable), I will make sure the celebration will be 43 days after death or 40 days after the resurrection.
