Does anyone know how far sugar cookies spread out on a cookie sheet when they are put in the oven?

It depends very much on the recipe you used. Try baking a test cookie to see what it does. If it spreads out more than you wanted it to, add some extra flour or powdered sugar (or a blend of both) to the dough and try again until you get it to hold its shape better.

Experiment with one... bake it and see. If it spreads too much for your liking then simply add some more flour or powdered sugar.

: ) I suggest experimenting with EVERY recipe to achieve the best one FOR YOU !

First things first, did you refrigerate your dough overnight, did you use a non-stick pan, a greased pan or a Silpat, believe it or not they all can be either causes or corrections to the "spread". Answer, 2 in. apart

That depends on your recipe. I have one recipe that doesn't spread at all, and one that spreads like it was primal ooze. The spread is determined by the fat.
