Technically drive-through, drive-thru is also acceptable. new words are invented/adapted constantly. For example motels used to be called motor hotels

You raise an interesting question. I agree with the people who say that both forms are correct. "Drive thru" sounds like what most linguists would call a "venacular form" or "fast speech form" of the word while they would call "fast food restaurant drive through" something like the "standard form" or the "gloss." "Thru" would be considered slang.

Fewer or More has to do with QUANTITY.
