A Christian telling someone about Christianity is like one hungry person showing another hungry person where to find bread.
Atheism is like two people who can't see any bread from where they stand, assuming there must not be any, and congratulating each other on their amazing powers of observation.

Why are so many materialists hanging out on the Spirituality boards?

qonox: i was careful not to assume they are hungry. just how they take their inability to see something as evidence it doesn't exist.

I guess I should have mentioned that the bread is a metaphor, not actual bread.

How's this:
A Christian is a person with a loaf of white bread, telling another person how good it is, and just assuming that this other person would LIKE white bread. Maybe he likes dark rye.
An atheist is just a person who doesn't like bread at all; maybe he likes it unleavened.
We can construct all sorts of analogies, but the fact remains that it is just a difference in philosophy/theology.
Here's another: it's like two children arguing,"is! is not! is! is not!"
What's the point, anyway?
The Christian feels that he has something of value.
It has no value for the atheist.
Here's a valuable history lesson for everyone:
Do you know what was used as currency in the late 1700's - early 1800's in this country?
Beaver pelts. They were a very valuable fur, besides having an asthetic value for hats.
Do you know how the "beaver economy" went flat?
Suddenly people wanted silk more than fur.
The pelt no longer held its value.
You "value" one thing ~ and this other guy values something else.
How you going to do business?

Well, what I think is, that analogy is just stupid. Try this one:
Christianity: A Christian telling someone about Christianity is like on hungry person telling another hungry person that if they just pray "bread" is everywhere.
Atheism: Two atheists in the real world who are able to see that there is NO bread anywhere that can be seen and for all intents and purposes the possibility of bread is far too remote to even entertain.

" 'Nor does the being hungry prove that we have bread.' But I think it may be urged that this misses the point. A man's physical hunger does not prove that man will get any bread; he may die of starvation on a raft in the Atlantic. But surely a man's hunger does prove that he comes of a race which repairs its body by eating and inhabits a world where eatable substances exist.
In the same way, though I do not believe (I wish I did) that my desire for Paradise proves that I shall enjoy it, I think it a pretty good indication that such a thing exists and that some men will."

No it is more like this. A Christian telling someone about Christianity is like one hungry person showing another hungry person where invisible make believe bread is.
Atheism is like two people who can't see the bread, have no proof of the bread existing in the house, and even have likely proof that bubba ate the last loaf yesterday.. Therefore they do not believe there is bread in the house.

A Christian telling someone about Christianity is like one hungry person telling another hungry person to pray for an invisible being to give them some bread, even though the invisible being has never give anyone bread
Atheism is like two people who don't care about an invisible being that might give them some bread, even though no one has seen it do so, they just go and make some bread.

No, Christianity is like two hungry people talking quite a lot about the bread they will have in the next life.
Atheists are eating the bread.

It sounds good from a Christian perspective.
But then the real question is, does the bread truly exist? Or is the hungry person so hungry he's imagining it?

A Christian telling someone about Christianity is like one hungry person telling another hungry person that they will find bread when they die.
Atheism is like two people who can't find any bread from where they stand, assuming there must not be any, they do not waste effort dreaming about food after death, but avert mental starvation by looking for something else to eat.

Here's a better one for you:
Christianity: People saying that there's bread, even though you can't see the bread, smell the bread, taste the bread, feel the bread...you just gotta believe there's bread coming, regardless of how hungry you get. They'll wait til they die of hunger.
Atheism: People who were told that there's bread, but when they couldn't see, smell, taste, or feel it, determined that there is no bread. They then decided to rely on themselves and go find something else to eat.
