You'll get a great view and photo op while you're riding on the Staten Island Ferry - and, it's free. You take the subway from 34th Street (Empire State Building is on 34th Street and Fifth Avenue) to South Ferry. It's less than a 15 minute ride. You also can take a bus. That takes a lot longer, but you'll be out in the street and will get to see more of New York. To actually take the boat to Liberty Island is expensive and time consuming.

A great place is from Jersey. Go to Liberty Park on the Jersey side in Jersey City and get a great view of the Statue and Ellis. It is also the best place to catch a boat to both Ms. Liberty and Ellis. Also you get a fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline. Ck out the website below.

you don't have to take the boat that actually drops you off at the statue of liberty there are lots of other boats you can take for less money (and the lines are way shorter) if you don't want to take the boat you can get a pretty good glimpse of what it looks like from the park and you are a little bit far away from the empire state building to walk I would take a taxi.
Have fun in NYC I went there last summer and it was very fun.

Hey,
The best place to view to Statue Of Liberty is from Battery Park. There is on fee into the and you can see they statue for free. in the park you can buy slivernirs(i spelled that wrong!),paintings, and many other things.

To get to Battery Park from the ESB. Take 34th street eastbound towards the Queens-Midtown Tunnel(I-495) take it down till the FDR. Take teh FDR south towards Battery Park/Lower Manhattan.i pick this route because while on teh FDR you can see the bridge(s) and Lower manhattan. While taking in south around the Brklyn Bridge you will see signs towards teh Battery Tunnel(MAKE SURE ITS NOT TEH BROOKLYN-BATTERY TUNNEL) after the little tunnel you shall see the signs towards the Battery PArk/ Ferries

Hands down, the Staten Island Ferry is the best-- and it's free.
