I sometimes have a reaction symptoms being - short of breath, wheezing, itchy palms and soles of feet, large red blotches all over my body - symptoms have been so severe I have twice ended up in hospital. My GP seems unable to come to a decision as to what i am allergic to, as am I. I thought initially it was down to prawns as it mostly happens after I have had them. Sometimes it has happened when I have not though - - any clues or points of reference would be appreciated

You need to see an allergist who will do a panel on you. Blood tests help but not as much. They will prick a zillion little tiny holes in your back and expose each to a certain allergen. Which ever react you will be different degrees allergic to.
WHY do you still eat prawns?? Next reaction might kill you!!!! ALL Allergies are cummulative -- ie -- each exposure increases the protein IEG (there might be a hyphen in there somewhere if you search on IEG, sorry about that) which causes mast cells to release histamines, which are what causes your reaction.
If you aren't ready for testing like that, try eliminating all sea food first, and if no reaction, you can then try to re-ad kinds one at a time if you don't want to give them up permanently.

Go to an allergist instead of just your GP. They can answer for sure. Also write down everything that you ate or drank prior to the reactions. It could be prawns plus a couple other things, so maybe you'll see a pattern. Good luck.

Do you have this reaction when you take vitamins? If so, this could be a true shellfish allergy. Often times the shells are ground up as a source of calcium. Good luck!

It's possible that it's more then one thing. Stay away from Shellfish...
Go to an allergist...they'll test you for every sort of thing...

It's important to know what you are allergic to when you are reacting so severly. I would go right away and stay away from foods...or other things that you may come in contact to, that you are questioning....

sounds more like a allergy to medication. Could also be sick building syndrom. Those would just be my first to guess without thinking about it. because of the weezing usually air born allergy. itching and spotches usually a contact allergy like soap.

Go to an allergist and they do a prick test on you to find out what you're allergic to and what you are not.
